Latinised form of the Greek Narkissos, meaning sleep or numbness.
Narcissus was a hunter in Greek mythology, son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. He was a beautiful youth who stops for a drink at a small pond. When he sees his reflection in the water of the pool he falls hopelessly in love with himself. Unable to capture his reflection he stays by the pool until he starves to death.
The mountain nymph, Echo, falls in love with Narcissus but is rejected by him. She is left in despair and eventually dies away herself, leaving only her voice behind.
