We have all been in the "Last Chance Saloon" so many times, whether it is the Financial Crash or a political hiatus, even a personal dilemma. Originally a place in America on the borders of a territory where alcohol was forbidden, and hence a hostelry in which one could get one's fill before abstinence, it has become a portmanteau term for the penultimate location before radical, and not always pleasant change.

My painting has fun with the cliches of the Wild West from the collapsing balustrades to the hard drinking cowboy. In films, it always seems that the set for the Saloon is very fragile. One imagines that a simple puff of wind could dislodge the whole edifice. We are learning to live in a world where disaster could be round the corner or perhaps it is already here?

Although this work was done back in the golden days of 2019 I think the message is still relevant. If you are in the Last Chance Saloon at least have a bit of fun while the fabric holds up. This is where you are.
