Born Glasgow, 1944. Studied at Glasgow School of Art 1961-1963 and St Martin's School of Art, 1963-1966. Until recently he was head of Printmaking at the Slade School of Fine Art, London.
His early reputation arose from his activities as a sculptor involved in performance art. From the late 1970s he has produced paintings and prints in which humour plays a central role. He has obtained international recognition for his paintings and prints, work with film, theatre and books. He has exhibited internationally since graduating including Tate Gallery, London, the Modern Art Gallery, Vienna and The Museum of Modern Art, Oxford and his work is represented in numerous private and public collections.
